Frequently Asked Questions
General
An assessment includes completing questionnaires, a clinical interview, collateral information from others, and a feedback session with an outcome report.
Neurodevelopmental assessments require evidence of symptoms during childhood, and at present. Usually, this must include symptoms before the age of 12 for a diagnosis. We ask for input from someone who knew you in childhood such as a parent or elder sibling, and someone who knows you well now. This can be the same person. If that is not available then school reports or other information sources may be suitable.
Possibly! A diagnosis is not always made, and all assessment criteria must be met to receive a diagnosis.
Yes. You'll receive a comprehensive written report outlining the assessment findings and any relevant diagnosis.
No, but if this is indicated as one of our recommendations we can help you with accessing medication through your doctor. The report you receive can be shared with other professionals to access medication. For adults (18+), it is recommended that you first reach out to your medical practice and clarify whether your GP or NP will be able to prescribe stimulant medication if you receive a diagnosis of ADHD. Most GP's will accept a diagnosis of ADHD from a clinical psychologist and be able to prescribe medication. For children and adolescents (Under 18), medication will typically need to be initiated by a paediatrician or psychiatrist. Your regular GP can then handle ongoing prescriptions after this has been initiated by a paediatrician or psychiatrist.
No, but if you have a GP referral feel free to send this through to us when booking.
In general, we see people from age 6 through to adulthood.
Yes, it's important to observe your child as part of the assessment. If they are likely to struggle with the length of the interview we will discuss suitability of this during your screening call. In some cases, we can do school observations instead or arrange a separate time to meet your child from the interview appointment. Adolescents are included in the interview to gain their voice during the assessment.
